You turn the oven dial, ready to cook, and click—the whole kitchen goes dark. It’s incredibly frustrating, but your home’s electrical system is actually doing exactly what it was designed to do: protecting you from a dangerous electrical fault.
When your consumer unit (fuse box) trips as soon as the oven is turned on, or shortly after it heats up, it means the appliance is causing a short circuit. Keep the oven switched off at the wall and do not try to force the breaker back on while the oven is running.
Here is a look at what usually causes this sudden blackout.
If your oven is throwing the electrical trip switch, one of these issues is almost certainly to blame:

The heating element is the metal coil that gets red hot inside your oven. Over time, extreme heat causes the outer metal casing of the element to weaken. If it cracks, blisters, or splits, the live electrical wire inside touches the outer casing, causing a direct short to earth. The second the oven tries to send power to that broken element, your fuse box detects the danger and cuts the power.
Look inside the oven (with a torch) at the element at the back or roof. If you see a split, a white blistered spot, or a heavy burn mark, you’ve found your culprit!
Have you recently attempted to tackle a filthy oven yourself? Supermarket cleaning sprays and heavy scrubbing often result in excess water and cleaning fluid seeping behind the fan cover, around the door seals, or into the selector switches. Water and electricity are a terrible mix.
If moisture touches the live electrical components, it will short the circuit. You will need to leave the oven off with the door open for a few days to let it dry out completely before trying again.
Ovens operate at extremely high temperatures, and over years of use, the internal wiring can slowly degrade. If the insulation around a wire melts, or if the main selector switch (the dial you turn to choose the oven setting) becomes worn out and shorts internally, it will trip the power. This requires a professional to safely diagnose and repair.
If your oven plugs into a standard 13-amp wall socket (rather than being hardwired into the wall on its own dedicated circuit), it shares power with other items in your kitchen. If you turn on the oven, the kettle, and the toaster all at once, the circuit might simply be drawing too much power, causing the breaker to trip to prevent the wires from overheating.
